The Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) operating in Maharashtra, including Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., reassured residents on May 20, 2026 that the supply of essential petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) remains normal and uninterrupted across the state. This statement comes amid ongoing concerns regarding fuel availability and potential panic buying among consumers. The State Level Coordinator for Maharashtra, Mihir Joshi, emphasized that all supply channels are operating efficiently, ensuring a stable fuel supply.
Authorities have reported that fuel stocks are being continuously monitored, with replenishment activities progressing smoothly across all locations, including terminals, depots, and retail outlets. The OMCs have appealed to the public to refrain from panic buying and to trust only official communications for accurate updates on fuel availability. The statement highlighted that adequate stocks of petroleum products are available to meet genuine consumer demand.
- Strict vigilance measures initiated — The state government has directed District Collectors to set up dedicated vigilance squads to conduct inspections and raids.
- Raids against black marketing — As of May 17, 2026, a total of 9,494 raids were conducted, resulting in the seizure of 4,449 cylinders.
- New PNG connections launched — Since April 1, 2026, 94,220 new Piped Natural Gas connections have been commissioned across Maharashtra.
In an effort to promote clean energy adoption, the state has also introduced measures allowing residents of newly constructed buildings to apply for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections either collectively or individually. City Gas Distribution companies are launching extensive advertising campaigns to encourage the adoption of PNG connections. This initiative is part of Maharashtra's commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing reliance on traditional fuel sources.
To prevent illegal activities such as hoarding and black marketing, the Maharashtra government has implemented strict vigilance measures. Individuals involved in unauthorized use of domestic LPG or involved in black market activities are facing stringent actions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
