A 14-wheeler trailer falling into 400-ft gorge is not small thing ah.
On May 29, 2026,vehicle registered as JK01BC/2359 was going from Sonamarg to Kargil when it reportedly lost control near Pani Matha in Zojila sector . It skidded off road and went down into gorge, but both people inside managed to escape without life-threatening injuries.
And that is exactly why local officials and residents were shocked . Because anyone who knows Zojila Pass knows how dangerous that stretch can get, with sharp curves, steep gradients and weather changing mood anytime.
Authorities reached scene quickly and shifted victims for immediate medical care at Primary Health Centre in Sonamarg . Thankfully, driver and helper survived, but truck itself was completely wrecked .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- 14-wheeler trailer JK01BC/2359 fell into 400-ft gorge near Pani Matha .
- Driver and helper survived without life-threatening injuries.
- Zojila Pass still remains risky due to difficult terrain and unpredictable weather.
And tbh, this again brings focus back on road safety along Srinagar-Leh National Highway . During operational season, traffic load is heavy and one small mistake on such mountain road can turn into disaster within seconds only.
Government is already working on planned tunnel across Zojila Pass, which is expected to open by 2028 . This tunnel will measure 14.2 km in length,9.5 m in width, and 7.57 m in height, and it will sit around 12,000 feet above sea level.
Project is part of larger road tunnel work in Jammu and Kashmir and is expected to cost approximately ₹1,400 billion . Once completed,it will be longest tunnel in Asia, and it should improve access to Ladakh along with tourism and armed forces logistics .
But till that happens, people still have to travel same dangerous route with same curves, same steep drops and same weather uncertainty . This accident ended with survival story, but next one may not be so lucky…
