Something very frustrating is happening right now in Maharashtra where thousands of farmers who were promised loan waivers are still waiting… and deadline has already moved once with no guarantee it won't move again.
Initially government had assured farmers that waivers under Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Loan Waiver Scheme 2026 would be processed by June 30 . That date passed . No disbursement happened . Now new deadline has been pushed to July 5,2026 and farmers are left anxious and honestly quite uncertain about whole situation.
One big reason for delay apparently is that state is still waiting for Governor's signature on necessary documents . That alone explains part of hold up but it does not explain everything.
Because now there is another issue that has made things even more complicated .
State government has requested list of farmers who pay income tax . The idea seems to be that income tax paying farmers would be excluded from scheme . Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne himself said at recent event celebrating birth anniversary of Rajamata Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar in Baramati that waiver will only be granted once required data on income tax paying farmers is compiled . That statement has increased skepticism among farming communities quite significantly.
Few key things to understand about this scheme:
- Farmers with outstanding loans as of March 31,2025 are eligible for waiver of up to ₹2 lakh .
- Farmers who have consistently repaid loans within specified timelines may receive additional incentive of ₹50,000.
- Government officials and those earning above ₹25,000 per month are excluded from scheme entirely.
And honestly,this income tax data requirement feels like it could become serious bottleneck . Compiling that kind of list takes time . Government cannot just produce that data overnight . And every day that verification process drags on,actual farming families are sitting with unpaid loans and no clarity on when relief is coming.
One good thing at least is that scheme will be implemented online,meaning farmers do not need to submit physical applications themselves . Committee under chairmanship of Chief Minister is also supposedly monitoring process to keep it transparent . That sounds reassuring on paper.
But there is real gap between how scheme sounds on paper and what farmers are experiencing on ground right now . Missed deadlines create distrust . And distrust in government welfare schemes is not small thing,especially in rural Maharashtra where farmers have faced repeated disappointments over many years.
Situation right now is that July 5 deadline is approaching and many farmers are still waiting for basic clarity on whether they will even qualify,let alone when money will actually arrive in their accounts…
And nobody has really answered that question yet.
