This push from Maharashtra government sounds big on paper, but honestly, child marriage is one of those issues where announcement alone cannot change ground reality . Aditi Tatkare, the Women and Child Development Minister of Maharashtra, has now said state is committed to making "child marriage-free Maharashtra."
And this is not small thing ah,because child marriage is not happening in some hidden isolated way only . It is often tied to poverty, migration, family pressure, safety fears and old social thinking, all mixed together.
Tatkare said department has developed modern and dynamic system to completely stop child marriages across Maharashtra . What stands out is that government is not talking only about police action, but also about bringing communities into process so people themselves report and prevent such cases .
Numbers shared by her are also quite serious . Administration reportedly prevented 1,400 child marriages last year and another 1,450 marriages in current year alone . That means this is not rare problem at all,it is happening again and again in many places .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Community members are being pushed to report and stop child marriages.
- 'Bal Gruh' shelters are being used so girls can stay safe and continue education .
- Cases are being filed against parents, priests and even guests involved in ceremonies.
And tbh, this migrant worker angle feels very important . Tatkare pointed out that families of migrant labourers are especially vulnerable because they keep moving from one district to another, and young girls can easily fall through gaps in school, safety and government support.
To deal with that, government has set up dedicated shelters called 'Bal Gruh' where girls can live safely and continue their education without interruption . A tracking portal has also been launched so children of migrant workers can get support and enroll in local schools when families move across districts.
But strict legal action is also part of this campaign . Tatkare said cases are being filed not just against parents arranging child marriages, but also priests conducting them and guests attending ceremonies . On Akshay Tritiya, authorities reportedly stopped 34 child marriages in single day, which shows how active this practice still is during so-called auspicious days.
Citizens have also been asked to act immediately if they see child marriage or identify underage mother, and report it through Child Helpline at 1098 . Good step, yes, but real question is whether people will actually speak up when family, society and local pressure are standing right in front of them…
