Main reason is not just what was discussed, but who did not turn up.
The Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee met on June 22,2026 at RGPV Naronha Academy in Bhopal to take inputs on proposed UCC . Meeting was scheduled from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM,but several big political parties stayed away.
Congress,Aam Aadmi Party (AAP),Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP),and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were absent from discussion . Only Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] participated, which itself says lot about how divided this issue already is .
And tbh, when something like UCC is being discussed, absence of so many parties is not small thing ah . Because if consultation looks limited from beginning, public trust also becomes difficult later.
CPI(M) member P.V. Ramchandran opposed UCC in meeting . He pointed toward present socio-economic problems like inflation and unemployment, and argued that bringing UCC now works like diversion from these issues . He also spoke about tribal communities in Madhya Pradesh, who form substantial part of state's population, and said their customs and traditions should be respected.
Few things standing out from this meeting:
- BJP expressed strong support for UCC and submitted multiple suggestions.
- Congress,AAP,BSP,and NCP did not participate in discussions .
- Suggestions included compulsory marriage registration and equal property rights for genders.
On other side,BJP General Secretary Rahul Kothari strongly backed UCC and suggested steps for better legal protection of women in marriage and divorce cases . He also talked about monitoring marriages involving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs),mainly to prevent abandonment cases.
Kothari also proposed national digital portal for maintaining marriage and divorce records,so judicial process can become smoother . On paper, some of these ideas sound focused on women's rights and legal clarity, but UCC debate is never only about paperwork .
And this is where whole matter becomes sensitive . One side is saying reforms are needed in family law, other side is saying traditions, tribal customs, inflation and unemployment cannot be ignored like this .
But if major opposition parties are not sitting in same room, then how broad can this consultation really become . Maybe UCC will move ahead politically, but whether people will accept it without feeling unheard… that question is still hanging.
