Saw some photos of Laos Deputy Prime Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane visiting the Taj Mahal on June 2,2026,and it's always nice to see these high-level visits. He was there with his wife in Agra.
And this isn't just a simple holiday trip ah . It is part of a three-day official visit to India .
The main reason he is here is to co-chair the 10th India-Laos Joint Commission Meeting with our External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar . This is a big one because it's also celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations between our countries. Not a small thing.
And Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also welcomed Phomvihane's visit, saying how important it is for the partnership . MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal even gave a quote saying,"The visit will add momentum to the longstanding partnership between India-Laos and further deepen cooperation across areas of mutual interest."
And honestly, these meetings are where real work happens behind the pictures.
Few things standing out from this visit:
- Phomvihane will lead discussions with India on various cooperative initiatives as co-chair.
- The visit aims to enhance collaboration in trade, culture, and economic sectors.
- Both nations share a rich heritage rooted in Buddhism and Ramayana traditions .
His schedule is pretty busy also . His itinerary includes participation in India-Laos Business Forum and even a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan .
But India and Laos have had a good relationship for long time, since diplomatic ties were set up in 1956 only . I remember last year Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit,so the connection is continuing.
These visits always look good, and the Taj Mahal backdrop is iconic of course . But you always wonder what the actual results will be in long run. The business forums and meetings sound promising… let's see what comes of it…
