A deeply disturbing case has come out of Kolhapur, and the more details that emerge, the harder it is to process. A sitting woman Sarpanch — a local leader responsible for governing her own village — was allegedly strangled to death, and then her body was hidden in a car and driven nearly 400 kilometers away in what looks like a desperate attempt to make the whole thing disappear.
The victim has been identified as Surekha Shivaji Nyare, a 40-year-old woman who served as the head of the Shirgaon Gram Panchayat in Shahuwadi taluka, Kolhapur. She was not just any resident — she was the elected representative of her community, someone actively involved in local governance and rural development. Her death has created an immediate political vacuum in the village, and beyond that, it has left people genuinely shaken about how personal disputes can spiral into something this extreme.
The primary suspect named by Maharashtra Police is Prakash alias Babu Ananda Patil. According to preliminary investigations, Patil and Nyare had been in a long-term romantic relationship. But things had apparently turned sour recently over persistent disagreements — and one particular demand. It is alleged that Surekha had been pushing Patil to formalize their relationship through marriage, something he was reportedly unwilling to do.
And honestly, that one detail changes the entire texture of this case.
On the morning of July 26, the accused allegedly convinced Surekha to accompany him to a remote agricultural field within the village limits. In that isolated location, a heated argument reportedly broke out, and Patil allegedly strangled her to death. But rather than leaving the body at the scene — which would have exposed him immediately to local Kolhapur authorities — he placed her remains in the boot of his Eco car and drove away.
What followed was a grueling 400-kilometer journey through the heart of Western Maharashtra toward Bhiwandi. He eventually reached the Kasheli area and went to the home of a relative, apparently thinking he had managed to get far enough away to buy himself some time.
That plan fell apart almost immediately.
His relatives noticed right away that something was seriously wrong. He was acting nervous and deeply suspicious, and he refused to leave his vehicle unattended — which, understandably, raised alarm. By the early hours of Tuesday, those relatives made the decision to contact local law enforcement. A team from Narpoli Police Station, working under the direct supervision of Senior Police Inspector Vijay Kadam, arrived to investigate the report of suspicious activity. When officers searched the Eco car, they found Surekha Nyare's body stashed in the rear compartment. Prakash Patil was detained immediately.
