The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a significant operation leading to the seizure of over 6,495 kilograms of substandard food products valued at ₹24.92 lakh. This decisive action is part of the FDA's continuous efforts to combat the sale and distribution of unsafe food across the state. Inspections were carried out in major divisions, including Mumbai, Konkan, Pune, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
The seized items included various categories of food products that were deemed unsafe for consumption. Among the notable findings was a significant quantity of expired packaged food and adulterated goods, raising serious concerns regarding food safety regulations in Maharashtra. The FDA’s rigorous inspections revealed that many manufacturers and vendors were operating without adhering to essential hygiene and safety standards, putting consumers at risk.
- 240.5 kg of mixed sweets — worth ₹1.22 lakh were confiscated from Arihant Sweets in Kandivli (East), exemplifying the scale of food safety violations.
- Statewide inspections — targeted multiple regions, ensuring comprehensive coverage and enforcement of food safety laws.
- Public health concerns — the FDA emphasizes the importance of safe food practices to protect consumers from health risks associated with substandard products.
The FDA’s crackdown is not merely a one-time effort; it reflects a broader initiative to enhance food safety across Maharashtra. Officials have stressed that such operations will continue regularly to ensure that all food products in the marketplace meet the required safety standards.
