After years of waiting,Kochi Bypass project finally seems to be moving again . And honestly, for anyone who has been stuck on Aroor-Edapally NH 66 Bypass or Edapally-Angamaly NH 544 route, this update will feel like big relief .
Central government has now sanctioned new 50-km-long,eight-lane greenfield corridor connecting Aroor on NH 66 with Angamaly on NH 544 . Main idea is simple,no need for vehicles to enter those badly crowded and accident-prone stretches if they are just passing through .
But this project is not new ah . It was originally proposed over a decade ago as six-lane corridor, and then got stuck in usual mess of land acquisition delays and paperwork . Its initial notification even expired in 2024,which tells you how long things were just hanging .
Benny Behanan, the local MP,has been pushing for this project for long time . He has blamed earlier delay on slow land acquisition during previous government's term, and also said new traffic survey became needed because vehicle numbers had gone up so much .
Few things standing out in this update:
- 50-km corridor approved, connecting Aroor and Angamaly to ease congestion.
- Land acquisition expedited, now allowing wider roadway of 70 meters.
- Future expansion plans include possible ten-lane stretch in second phase.
And tbh,the shift from six-lane to eight-lane itself says everything about how badly traffic has grown in this region . What was planned years ago probably became outdated before even starting properly.
NHAI officials have said project is planned as eight lanes wide, but more details on actual construction are still pending . So yes, approval has come, but people will still wait to see timelines, contract details and real work on ground.
One interesting question is around alignment being extended from Nettoor to Aroor . Because earlier there was plan for trumpet-shaped flyover at Nettoor to manage traffic from multiple routes . Now with this change, people are obviously wondering what happens to that plan.
For daily commuters, this bypass could mean less travel time, less fuel wasted and hopefully safer roads . Local economy also benefits when movement becomes smoother,no doubt about that.
But Kerala has seen enough projects where approval and actual completion are two different stories . So now real question is,whether land acquisition, resources and execution will move fast this time…
