Kerala is trying something quite interesting in its fight against drug abuse, and honestly, this move feels more community-focused than usual police-style campaign . Under 'Operation Toofan',Home Department is now bringing religious leaders also into awareness and outreach work.
On June 20,2026 ,Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced that Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, president of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, has been designated as 'Toofan warrior' . This title is being given to influential people and volunteers who are supporting anti-drug campaign.
Event happened in Kozhikode, where Mr . Thangal was also presented badge for his role in this effort . And see, this is not small thing ah,because in Kerala many families still listen seriously when religious and community leaders speak.
Chennithala said this initiative is part of United Democratic Front (UDF) government's determined effort to rescue younger generation from drug addiction threat . Strong words, but problem is also serious only, especially when schools and parents are being pulled into awareness plans.
He also announced awareness event in schools statewide on June 26 ,which matches with International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking . Ministers,MLAs,and MPs are expected to take part, with message aimed at both students and parents.
Few things standing out here:
- Over ₹15 crore in drugs confiscated under operation so far .
- Religious leaders are being brought in for wider community outreach.
- Schools will host awareness programs on drug abuse on June 26 .
And tbh, this approach makes sense in one way . Police action can catch supply side, but changing mindset inside homes, schools and local communities needs different kind of voice. That is where people like Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal may have real reach.
Another prominent figure,Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar ,was also honoured as 'Toofan warrior' at separate event . Chennithala thanked Musliar for his willingness to contribute to initiative, which again shows government is trying to make this more than just department-level action.
Looking ahead,Chennithala is also scheduled to meet Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil ,Bishop of Thamarassery Diocese,to discuss expanding support for initiative . Aim being talked about is drug-free Kerala, but how far speeches, badges and school events can go against real drug networks… that question is still hanging there…
