On June 21, 2026 ,diplomatic community in New Delhi came together to celebrate 12th International Day of Yoga . External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led group of diplomats in yoga session, and message was very simple, yoga should not remain one-day event only.
Theme this year was ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ ,which is actually practical ah . Because yoga is not just for fitness influencers or morning park groups,it is being spoken about as something people of all ages can include in daily life.
Jaishankar also posted about event on social media, saying,“Joined the Diplomatic Corps at New Delhi to celebrate the #InternationalDayofYoga. As PM @narendramodi highlighted, we must strive to make yoga a part of our lives, part of our families, and a part of our coming generations.”
And same day,Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in large yoga session in Kolkata . That part again shows how seriously government is trying to make yoga look like way of life, not just cultural symbol .
Few things standing out clearly in this event:
- Global participation — yoga sessions held across various countries
- Promoting healthy ageing — theme emphasizes wellness for all ages
- Videos from embassies — showcasing unique celebrations by Australia and France
Australian High Commission and French Embassy also shared videos from their yoga sessions, and tbh, this is where cultural exchange angle became more visible . Australian envoy Philip Green posted video showing his team doing yoga across various Indian cities, and said yoga connects people across borders.
French Embassy took different visual route, showing members practicing yoga inside beautifully decorated hall with model of Eiffel Tower included in event . Small detail, but it does make whole thing feel more personal than routine diplomatic post .
And this is why yoga diplomacy works in interesting way . Nobody has to make loud political statement, but same room has diplomats, embassy teams, cultural symbols and one shared practice . Quietly,it sends message.
Still, question is whether people will actually make yoga part of daily life, part of families, and coming generations… or whether many will remember it mostly when June 21 comes around again…
