Honestly that feels like more than just symbolic gesture given what the ship is actually capable of .
This is sixth frigate under Project 17A and more are expected to follow . With each successive ship,India's naval combat capabilities are expected to grow meaningfully . Navy described INS Mahendragiri as "formidable force multiplier" for safeguarding maritime interests and contributing to stability across Indo-Pacific region.
What really stands out here is the employment and industrial angle . Building warships with over 75% indigenous content means hundreds of smaller Indian businesses were part of this . MSMEs contributing to defence production… that is not something that gets discussed enough outside of policy circles.
India's maritime ambitions in Indo-Pacific are clearly growing at serious pace right now . Commissioning of INS Mahendragiri adds one more layer to that strategy . But whether Project 17A's remaining frigates arrive on schedule and whether indigenous systems perform at expected levels during actual operations… those are questions that only time will properly answer
