C. feels like one of those ideas many Indian families abroad may hear and think, why did this not happen earlier only . For diaspora, especially in United States, this is not small thing ah .
Project is being led by Dr. Amitabh Sharma,an Indian-American educationist, and it has apparently been in works for nearly eight years . Museum aims to tell story of India's civilization spanning over 11,000 years, which itself is massive responsibility.
And what stands out is that this is being planned as first of its kind museum in United States focusing solely on India’s historical and cultural contributions . Not one corner in some larger Asian exhibit, but full space around India itself .
Dr. Sharma said that historically,India's story has often been shown through outside perspectives, and not with full strength of its own heritage . His line really sums up whole feeling: "Indian history and Indian civilization has never been portrayed in the strength that it deserves."
Museum plan also sounds quite ambitious . It is described as 20,000-square-foot complex with ten galleries,a 350-seat auditorium and advanced multimedia displays . There will be high-tech exhibits too, including virtual reality and interactive displays,so visitors are not just reading boards and walking away bored .
Few key things being planned here:
- 20,000-square-foot complex with ten galleries focused on Indian heritage .
- High-tech exhibits using virtual reality and interactive displays.
- Funding goal of $12-$14 million, with community support and sponsorships needed.
And tbh,the themes they want to cover are huge by themselves . Indus Valley civilization,Vedic traditions, scientific achievements and India's transition to modern democracy are all expected to be part of museum story . Each one of these can fill entire separate space.
At same time, this is clearly not meant only for Indian diaspora . Idea is also to educate mainstream Americans and other ethnic communities,so they understand India beyond food, festivals and Bollywood type surface-level image.
Washington D.C. was chosen because of its international visibility, and efforts are still going on to secure right location . Dr. Sharma also said large amount of historical data has been collected and validated, which matters because museum like this will be judged very closely .
Community response has already been positive, and that says something . Maybe people were waiting for long time to see Indian history represented with dignity in such place… but now real question is whether funding, location and execution can all come together without losing original vision…
