So the government has changed some big rules for foreigners staying in India for long time . And honestly,it seems like they are tightening up the whole registration process quite a bit.
Before, foreigners had to register within 14 days after their 180-day stay was finished . But now, that whole system is changed. The new rule says you have to register before you even hit 180-day limit.
And tbh, this is big shift in how things are done. It feels like they want to keep a much closer eye on who is staying and for how long,no more grace period ah .
This is all part of the amendments to Immigration and Foreigners Rules,2025 . The government says it's to simplify things and make sure everyone is following rules. But it also means you have to be much more careful with your dates .
And late registration? That will now only be allowed in very urgent situations,so no more casual delays .
Few things standing out clearly from this update:
- Registration for stays over 180 days must now happen before the limit is reached, not after.
- Children with at least one Indian citizen parent are now exempt from birth notification rule for visa purposes.
- Late registration is now strictly for emergencies only, making compliance much more strict.
But there is some good news also, especially for families . Earlier,if a child was born here to foreign parents, they had to inform authorities within 30 days. Now,if one parent is an Indian citizen, that step is not needed anymore, which is a relief for many.
Of course,if that child later gets foreign citizenship while living in India, the parents still have to tell the registration officer about it within 30 days.
And it's not just for individuals . new regulations also mean hospitals and medical places have to change how they report foreign nationals they are treating . So it's administrative change across board.
This whole thing feels like one big push to streamline the system . On one hand,it's easier for some mixed-nationality families, but on other hand,it's much stricter for individual visitors on longer visas .
You just wonder how many people will get caught out by this change… especially those who were used to the old way of doing things…
