This BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam is not small news ah . India slowly moving from being mostly buyer in defense market to becoming seller also, and this announcement makes that shift feel very real.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced on June 1,2026,that BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam has been finalized . He said this during media event at Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, and honestly, timing also says lot about India's message to region .
And deal with Vietnam has already been signed, while similar deal with Indonesia is also in final stages . That part matters because this is not just one random export order,India is clearly trying to build stronger defense reach in ASEAN region.
BrahMos missile itself is joint venture between India and Russia . It has already got attention in global defense market, especially after Philippines became first buyer of these supersonic cruise missiles . Philippines got first shipment in 2024,and second batch came in April 2025.
Few things standing out here:
- BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam has been finalized.
- Similar deal with Indonesia is also in final stages .
- Philippines was inaugural buyer and received shipments in 2024 and April 2025.
And tbh,India's defense ties with Vietnam have been getting warmer for some time only . During recent visit to Hanoi,Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held detailed discussions with Vietnamese officials, including General Phan Van Giang,to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation.
That visit also marked 10-year anniversary of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Vietnam . This partnership was recently upgraded to Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which sounds formal, but basically shows both sides are trying to move closer on security and defense matters .
But bigger picture is even more interesting . Indian government wants defense exports to reach ₹50,000 crore by 2030,and these BrahMos deals fit into that larger plan of building India's defense manufacturing and export strength.
Analysts believe as India's defense market expands,it is trying to build stronger foothold in regions matching its geopolitical interests, especially Global South . Southeast Asia is becoming one of those spaces where defense, trust and strategy are all mixing together…
And now question is,after Vietnam and maybe Indonesia, which country comes next for BrahMos…
