Union Minister Piyush Goyal is saying both sides are on track to sign free trade agreement by December 2026,and if that actually happens,it can change many things for exporters and buyers here .
During recent interaction in Mumbai,Goyal said,"With almost zero duty, almost the entire European market will be open for us." That one line only explains why business circles are excited ah,because European market opening up with almost zero duty is not small thing .
The FTA is being called 'mother of all deals,' after negotiations concluded on January 27,2026 . As per current plan, this pact is expected to be implemented by February or March of following year.
Few key points standing out here:
- India and European Union are on track to sign landmark free trade agreement by December 2026.
- Duty-free access may come for approximately 93% of Indian exports to EU.
- EU and India together account for about 25% of global GDP.
And tbh, that 93% number is where exporters will really pay attention . If Indian goods get easier access to EU markets,it can give boost to sectors which keep fighting duty barriers and tough competition.
At same time,Indian consumers may also see impact from other side . Luxury imports from EU,including cars and wines, are anticipated to become more affordable,so this is not just about exporters sitting in boardrooms.
There is also wider trade mood building around India . Goyal is set to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this week, and at G7 Summit discussions,Canadian Prime Minister expressed interest in concluding a trade agreement with India . World is clearly looking at India differently rn .
Analysts are expecting better trade relations with EU to bring more foreign investment and job creation within India . But as always, real benefit will depend on fine print, how fast businesses can use it,and whether common people actually feel anything beyond big announcements…
