Not small thing ah.
Government is now moving ahead with plan to establish four critical mineral processing plants across Odisha,Gujarat,Telangana, and Maharashtra . This is part of National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM),which is basically meant to make India stronger in producing materials needed for high-tech industries.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy has said this marks big shift in how India handles mineral processing . For long time,India has depended heavily on imports, especially from China, and that dependency has always been uncomfortable.
And this is where story becomes more interesting.
Government has also started auctioning mining blocks meant for critical minerals . Reddy said this is first such move since India's independence, and many blocks have already been auctioned . That means India is not just talking about processing plants, but also trying to build supply chain from mining side itself.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Four processing plants are planned in Odisha,Gujarat,Telangana, and Maharashtra .
- Auctions of critical mineral blocks are being used to increase domestic production .
- India is signing MOUs with various countries for resource security.
India already has fifth-largest rare earth reserves globally and also has technology to produce these minerals . But problem has been processing and separation, where China currently dominates market in major way . So reducing that dependence is not just economic issue,it is geopolitical also.
And tbh, rare earths used to sound like boring mining topic earlier, but now they are directly linked to national security,EV batteries, semiconductors, and defense systems . Whoever controls supply chain gets serious power in global industry.
Government expects tangible progress in critical minerals sector within next year . Processing infrastructure, auctions, and international partnerships are all moving together now,at least on paper.
But real question is whether India can turn reserves and plans into actual large-scale processing capacity fast enough… because China’s hold on this space did not happen overnight either…
