European Commissioner for the Mediterranean,Dubravka Suica meeting India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Cyprus shows how much attention this India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is getting now.
Suica later posted on X and said,"Happy to meet you @DrSJaishankar today in Cyprus at Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers." Simple line, but behind it there is lot of geopolitics, trade, energy and digital connection talk happening quietly.
The corridor is being seen as one major way to connect India,Middle East and Europe better . Trade routes, energy links, digital networks, all these things are being discussed together now. And at same time,Europe and India are clearly trying to show they are on same page when tensions are rising around West Asia.
Few things standing out from this visit:
- EAM Jaishankar's official visit took place from May 27-28 in Cyprus at invitation of EU officials.
- Informal Gymnich meeting gave space to discuss shared geopolitical interests and regional stability.
- Bilateral meetings included key ministers from Saudi Arabia,Ukraine, and Spain.
And Suica’s statement was not casual only. She said,"At a time of growing tensions, the EU and India remain committed to working together to support stability in Middle East and ensure secure maritime routes, including through Strait of Hormuz,". That Strait of Hormuz mention is not small thing ah,because maritime security there directly affects energy and trade movement.
MEA also said the informal Gymnich meeting focused on policy issues and geopolitical impact of developments in West Asia . Basically,India was not just attending one diplomatic event, but using same space to talk about regional stability, cooperation and where India-EU ties are going next.
During Cyprus visit,S. Jaishankar also held structured bilateral meetings with Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative, and Constantinos Kombos,Cyprus' Foreign Minister . These talks covered ongoing Ukraine conflict,India-EU cooperation and other regional developments.
And tbh, this is where IMEC becomes bigger than corridor name . It is about how India,EU,Cyprus and key regional partners are trying to keep trade routes open, reduce uncertainty and build some working arrangement in difficult time.
But question is,with tensions in Middle East still active and global trade routes under pressure, how fast can IMEC actually move from diplomatic discussion to real ground work…
