The Niradhar Vridhha Pension Yojana (Destitute Elderly Pension Scheme) initiated by the Gujarat government has emerged as an essential support system for the elderly population across the state. Launched with the aim of ensuring financial independence for senior citizens, the scheme offers monthly assistance of ₹1,000 for individuals aged 60 to 79 and ₹1,250 for those aged 80 and above. This initiative is administered by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, reflecting the government's commitment to enhance the quality of life for its elderly residents.
For many beneficiaries, like Hajarimal Joshi from Palanpur Taluka, the scheme has been life-changing. After receiving his pension for over ten years, Hajarimal expressed gratitude, stating, "This support allows me to manage my daily expenses without relying on my children." The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system ensures that the funds are deposited directly into the beneficiaries' bank accounts, adding a layer of convenience and security to the process.

Hajarimal emphasized that the financial support has alleviated his worries about medical expenses and daily necessities. He remarked, "This assistance has become a pillar of support, allowing me to live with dignity and self-respect." The local administration, represented by S.B. Prajapati, the Mamlatdar of Palanpur, confirmed that nearly 3,988 beneficiaries in the region are currently receiving assistance under this scheme, highlighting its widespread impact.
Moreover, the Gujarat government has made strides in simplifying the application process, ensuring that forms are available at District Collector's and Mamlatdar's offices free of charge. Interested individuals can also apply online through their respective Gram Panchayat offices, making the scheme accessible to a broader audience. As the program continues to support the aging population, it embodies the state’s commitment to fostering a society that respects and cares for its elderly citizens.
