England looked like they had chance to control this three-match series, but New Zealand pulled it back hard in second Test match held at The Kia Oval.
This was match which levelled series at 1-1,and England were already under pressure without their captain,Ben Stokes . On final day, they started at 182-5 while chasing 463 runs, which honestly already felt like mountain too high.
But still, you expect some fight . Joe Root made 77 runs and Harry Brook made 58 runs, but once New Zealand's bowling got rhythm,England's batting just started falling apart.
Matt Henry was main problem for them. He finished with match figures of 11-109,including 6-29 in second innings, and that is proper match-winning spell . England's tail was exposed very quickly, and final wickets went down in less than an hour of play.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- England's batting collapsed while chasing 463 runs .
- Matt Henry produced 11-109 and 6-29 in second innings .
- Third Test at Trent Bridge now becomes huge for England .
And tbh, this defeat feels worse because it came right after confidence-boosting victory in first Test . One week team looks settled, next week same team looks completely shaken.
There is also off-field mess around Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, who were penalized for breaking curfew during celebrations . That ongoing investigation regarding their conduct is still hanging over team, and timing could not be worse.
Now England have to regroup before decisive third Test at Trent Bridge . Ben Stokes is expected to return as captain, and his presence may calm things down, but New Zealand's bowling attack has already shown what it can do.
At same time, young and inexperienced English squad now has to prove it can handle pressure when series is on line . Whether this loss becomes just one bad match or start of bigger worry for England… that question is still sitting there .
