External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met U Min Aung Hlaing, the President of Myanmar,in New Delhi on Saturday,May 30,and focus was clearly on pushing India-Myanmar ties forward .
Jaishankar later posted on X that he was pleased to meet President U Min Aung Hlaing . He also acknowledged his positive sentiment towards enhancing longstanding cooperation between India and Myanmar. Diplomatic language, yes, but message is simple only, both sides want to keep relationship active.
And timing is also interesting because President U Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 1 . So this meeting with S. Jaishankar feels like setting ground before bigger political discussion happens.
When U Min Aung Hlaing arrived in New Delhi,Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed him . Singh also wrote on X,"Honoured to welcome President H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar on his arrival in Delhi. His visit underscores the enduring civilizational, cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Myanmar."
That quote says lot about how India is framing this visit . Not just politics, not just trade, but old cultural and people connections also. And honestly, with Myanmar, these layers always matter because border, culture, security and business all get mixed together.
Few things standing out clearly in this visit:
- This is President U Min Aung Hlaing's inaugural trip to India since assuming office .
- He is accompanied by cabinet ministers, senior officials, and business leaders.
- U Min Aung Hlaing is set to engage in a business forum for trade and investment opportunities .
The visit actually began from Gaya,Bihar, where Myanmar President was greeted on arrival . Ministry of External Affairs said visit symbolizes strong spiritual, historical, and people-to-people connections between both countries. That Gaya stop is not random ah,it gives whole visit one spiritual and historical angle also .
But at same time, real discussion will likely go beyond warm words . India and Myanmar have mutual interests in regional security, economic development, connectivity and trade. With delegation including business leaders, this is clearly not just ceremonial trip.
After New Delhi engagements,President U Min Aung Hlaing will travel to Mumbai on June 2 for further interactions with business leaders and site visits . So from Gaya to New Delhi to Mumbai, this visit is covering spiritual, diplomatic and business spaces together .
And tbh, that is why this visit feels important but also slightly layered . Everyone is talking about peace, prosperity and partnership, but what actually comes out after June 1 and June 2 is still something people will be watching…
