Domestic worker Mina Haldar was not some unknown outsider here, and that makes whole thing feel even more heavy.
A Delhi court has now sent Manish Gupta,a dermatologist,to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with murder of his domestic worker,Mina Haldar . Police had asked for custody saying more evidence had to be gathered and items linked to crime had to be recovered .
What makes case more chilling is how police found him . Gupta was apprehended after police reportedly found him at scene beside Haldar's body on June 18,after neighbor alerted authorities on seeing her lying in pool of blood.
And tbh, that detail itself is hard to process.
During investigation, police said Gupta allegedly confessed to murder during initial inquiry . According to findings,a bat believed to have been used to bludgeon Haldar and knife presumed to have been used to slit her throat were recovered from his residence in East of Kailash.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Judicial custody for 14 days has been ordered to help investigation move ahead.
- Initial confession was reported by police during questioning of Gupta .
- Evidence recovered includes bat and knife linked to murder .
Mina Haldar was 58 and originally from Kolkata . She had been employed by Gupta's family for over 16 years, which is not small thing ah . When someone works in private household for that long, there is trust, familiarity, daily dependence… and then such allegation shakes everything .
Court has also mandated medical examination of Gupta and told police to present him before Duty Magistrate after remand period ends . So legally, case is still moving through process and investigation will decide what all finally stands.
But at same time, this case has again brought uncomfortable question about safety of domestic workers inside private homes . Because many of them work behind closed doors, without much public visibility, and when something goes wrong, who is really watching…
And maybe that is why this case is getting so much attention rn . Not just because of one alleged murder, but because it forces people to look at how vulnerable domestic workers can be,even after years of service in same house…
