On Saturday,Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was in Singapore for Shangri-La Dialogue and he ended up holding series of high-level bilateral meetings with global security officials .
These were not random handshakes only . Main focus was clearly on pushing India’s defence cooperation with different partners, and that too across technology, training, innovation and strategic security discussions .
Singh first engaged with Sweden's State Secretary to Minister of Defence,Peter Sandwall . Their discussion was around expanding collaboration in technology and innovation, and this directly connects to strengthening India-Sweden defence ties . Not flashy news maybe, but defence tech cooperation is not small thing ah .
Then came meeting with General Onno Eichelsheim,Chief of Defence from the Netherlands . Here, talks moved more toward military cooperation, exchange programs and joint training exercises . Basically, more practical soldier-to-soldier and institution-to-institution engagement.
Few things standing out clearly from these meetings:
- Strengthening India-Sweden ties — Discussions focused on defence cooperation and innovation.
- Enhanced military exchanges — Bilateral talks with the Netherlands emphasized joint training initiatives.
- Strategic dialogue with the EU — Meetings advanced discussions on shared security interests and cooperation .
And after these discussions,Ministry of Defence shared updates on social media, pointing to importance of strong military-to-military ties . Sometimes these posts look routine, but they also show where India is trying to build comfort and trust quietly .
Singh also interacted with Belen Martinez Carbonell,Secretary General of the European External Action Service, and Lieutenant General Enrico Barduani,Deputy Chair of the European Union Military Committee . Those talks focused on India-European Union strategic dialogue, shared security concerns and possibilities for deeper defence cooperation.
But Netherlands angle kept coming back too . Singh met Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius,Defence Minister of Netherlands, and both sides explored collaboration in defence industrial sector . That tells you partnership is not just about exercises,it is also about production, industry and future capability.
He also met his Australian counterpart,Meghan Quinn, where they reviewed progress of India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and discussed upcoming high-level engagements . So yes,India seems to be using Shangri-La Dialogue to keep many defence tracks active at same time… and question is how much of this will turn into real action on ground…
