So government finally signed MoUs for Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 on June 2,2026 . And this time, they are talking about a "community-centered approach" which sounds promising, but we have heard things like this before.
The main news is that agreements were signed with four states—Arunachal Pradesh,Jharkhand,Tamil Nadu, and Nagaland—and also with the Union Territory of Puducherry . Goal is to make sure every single rural household gets safe drinking water on regular basis .
And honestly, this is where things get interesting. The whole idea is not just to install taps but to make rural water governance a local thing.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil was there for the virtual meetings with Chief Ministers . He said something that is very true, that this mission has really reduced the burden for women and girls who had to collect water from far away. That's a huge impact ah.
But new phase is focusing more on sustaining what has been built . It's about keeping tap connections functional and also promoting water conservation. Because what's the use of a tap with no water in it...
Few things standing out clearly in this plan:
- Community-led governance model — emphasizes local participation in water management.
- Focus on infrastructure sustainability — aims to maintain tap connections and ensure water quality .
- Regular monitoring and reviews — crucial for success of rural water supply systems .
And then there's official side of things . Ashok Meena, the Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS),was talking about the need for institutional mechanisms.
He wants district collectors to hold regular meetings for the District Water and Sanitation Mission . idea is to get village action plans ready and help gram panchayats get certified to manage their own water supply systems .
And tbh, this is where real work begins . It’s easy to make announcements, but making sure gram panchayat can actually manage a whole water system is a different challenge altogether.
So the plan looks good on paper . But will it really change things at village level this time only... or is it just another big scheme that starts strong and then slowly fades away...
