Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-owned telecommunications company, has reported a significant financial turnaround, with its revenue soaring from ₹21,000 crore to ₹25,000 crore in just two years. This impressive growth has been attributed to a systematic approach to operations and management, as highlighted by the Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BSNL has transformed from a struggling entity into a vital contributor to digital inclusion and national development.
The revival strategy implemented at BSNL involved adopting practices commonly found in the private sector, addressing long-standing issues such as outdated infrastructure and inefficient work culture. The minister noted that the company’s EBITDA has surged dramatically, climbing from a mere ₹50 crore to nearly ₹7,000 crore in the same period. This financial recovery is a testament to the effective infrastructure improvements and rigorous monitoring mechanisms that have been put in place.
- Indigenous 4G technology deployment — BSNL has successfully launched indigenous 4G on 100,000 towers, elevating its technological capabilities.
- Customer trust rebuilding — The company has maintained significantly lower tariffs compared to private competitors.
- Infrastructure upgrades — Nearly 50,000 batteries were replaced and aging cables upgraded to enhance service quality.
In regions like Andhra Pradesh, where service reliability was a concern, BSNL set ambitious targets to improve tower uptime from 75% to 95%. This commitment to enhancing service quality has been complemented by the rapid deployment of indigenous 4G technology, placing India among the few countries globally to achieve such advancements. The minister proudly stated that India is now the fifth country worldwide to develop robust indigenous 4G technology.
To further rebuild customer trust, BSNL has introduced initiatives such as distributing Re 1 SIM cards through India Post offices, allowing potential users to experience their services with minimal commitment. This strategic move not only aims to attract new customers but also positions BSNL as a competitive player in the telecommunications market, reinforcing its status as a public sector leader in India’s digital landscape.
