One very serious case has now come up from Maharashtra where a man claiming his brother was killed in fake encounter is now fighting just to stay safe himself . And honestly, the situation becomes more disturbing when you understand exactly what he is up against.
Surendra Gopal Rana has filed plea before Bombay High Court seeking police protection after his security was reportedly withdrawn without any proper justification . Court took up this matter on July 9,2026 and has asked Maharashtra government to submit its reply within two weeks.
The background here is deeply troubling . Rana alleges that his brother,Jogendra Rana, was murdered in fake encounter back in July 2018 . He is complainant in ongoing investigation into that death . So the fact that his protection was removed while trial is still happening… that alone raises serious questions .
His advocate,Datta Mane, explained during hearing that police protection was first granted to Rana in August 2023 . But then on July 2,2025 that protection was abruptly terminated . No clear reason offered, just gone .
And this is where situation becomes really uncomfortable.
Mane also pointed out something that is very difficult to ignore . One of accused police officers in this case is currently posted on court duty at Vasai court — the exact same place where criminal trial related to Jogendra's death is supposed to take place . Complainant has no protection and accused officer is present at very venue where justice is being sought . That is not small coincidence .
Three key things standing out clearly from this case:
- Surendra's police protection was granted in August 2023 but suddenly withdrawn on July 2,2025 despite active trial.
- Accused police officers were arrested but later released on bail, raising direct safety concerns for Rana and witnesses.
- Petition also seeks protection for eyewitnesses who are allegedly facing intimidation right now .
Additional Public Prosecutor Ashish Satpute asked for more time to prepare state's response and court granted that request . Bench acknowledged urgency of matter especially since petition has been pending since 2025 already.
Honestly, the layered nature of this whole situation is what makes it so heavy . You have person who came forward to report alleged police misconduct, got protection because of very real threat to his life, and then that protection was quietly pulled away . Meanwhile accused officers are walking free on bail.
In cases involving police as accused, witness protection is not just formality . It becomes actual foundation of whether fair trial is even possible . If people who are supposed to testify feel unsafe, entire judicial process suffers because of it.
Rana's petition is not just about his own safety either . He has specifically asked court to extend protection to other key witnesses in case who are reportedly also under threat . So this is bigger than one person's security .
Court has shown it is taking matter seriously for now . But two weeks will pass and then response will come and then arguments will begin… and somewhere in all that legal back and forth, real question remains — can someone genuinely seeking justice against powerful accused ever feel safe long enough to see that justice through
