So Juhu Beach right now is basically dealing with one massive wave of garbage… and honestly,the scale of what BMC is trying to clean up is hard to even imagine properly.
According to reports,over past ten days BMC has collected approximately 1,800 metric tonnes of debris from Juhu Beach alone . This directly came after Mumbai experienced more than 1,000 mm of rainfall in early July . All that excessive rain pushed floating garbage from drains and natural water channels into Arabian Sea,which then got pushed right back onto beach by strong tides.
And daily numbers are not small thing at all . BMC is currently removing nearly 180 MT of waste every single day from Juhu Beach . Under normal conditions that figure sits at around 60 MT . So we are basically talking about three times usual workload right now.
To handle this,the Solid Waste Management Department has mobilized seriously heavy resources on ground . Cleanup operations currently include three beach-cleaning machines,four bobcats,fifteen dumpers,two JCBs,two tractor-trolleys,two poclain excavators,and total of 240 sanitation workers operating across two shifts . That is considerable deployment by any standard.
Few key things standing out from this whole situation:
- Daily waste removal capacity has increased to 180 MT with additional machines and workers deployed to manage cleanup.
- BMC is urging residents to avoid littering drains and channels to prevent further marine pollution.
- Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders including Kishori Pednekar have raised concerns over sanitation issues along coastline .
And this is exactly where situation gets more complicated .
Despite all this deployment,BMC is facing criticism from opposition side . Kishori Pednekar,Leader of Opposition and Shiv Sena (UBT) member,has claimed that garbage has accumulated to heights of nearly three feet along various parts of Mumbai's coastline . She also pointed out that debris removed from drains is not being adequately cleared,which means it is just flowing back into sea and causing further pollution . That is serious accusation if true .
Honestly,the monsoon situation every year exposes same painful loop . Rain comes,drains overflow,garbage hits sea,tides push it back to shore,cleanup crews scramble . And this cycle keeps repeating because root problem of people littering drains and water channels never really gets addressed properly .
BMC has reiterated importance of community cooperation and is appealing to residents to stop littering . Which is right thing to say,but how many people actually change behavior because of civic appeal… that is genuinely uncertain.
Sanitation workers doing two shifts in monsoon conditions to move 180 MT of waste daily deserve far more attention than they usually get in this whole conversation.
And as monsoon season continues,question really is whether cleanup speed can keep matching the incoming wave of debris… or whether beach will just keep swinging between clean and covered depending on next high tide
