When two countries decide to hold annual Defence Ministers’ Dialogue, especially with Indo-Pacific pressure growing,it clearly says something bigger is happening in background.
And this decision came during inaugural Defence Minister's Dialogue, where Australia and India openly recognised need to deal with growing influence of China in Indian Ocean . That part is important because nobody is pretending anymore that this is just normal diplomacy.
According to report in The Australian, the 2026 National Defence Strategy of Australia identifies Northeast Indian Ocean as primary military interest and calls India top-tier security partner . That is not small wording . It basically shows India has moved much higher in Australia’s security thinking.
But main reason behind this closeness is China’s extensive military build-up,which report says is now largest in world . Chinese naval forces are patrolling Indian Ocean and pushing reach beyond Malacca Strait, and that is making both Australia and India think more seriously about maritime cooperation .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Australia and India are holding joint anti-submarine warfare exercises for enhanced maritime security .
- Defence Industry Collaboration is focusing on co-developing defence technologies, local production and indigenisation.
- Richard Marles will visit India for Upcoming Defence Ministers' Meeting and meet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
And Samuel Bashfield and Grace Corcoran, researchers at La Trobe Centre for Global Security and Australia India Institute, respectively, also pointed out that shared geography and security concerns are creating practical space for cooperation . Basically, both sides are looking at same ocean and seeing same problem .
During his upcoming trip,Richard Marles has expressed enthusiasm about meeting Rajnath Singh and discussing how to further strengthen partnership . This meeting will also build on momentum from Singh’s visit to Australia last year,so this is not one random meeting only.
Australian Defence Ministry said this dialogue shows unprecedented progress in bilateral defence relations . Ministry of Defence also noted increased frequency of joint military exercises, and establishment of annual Defence Ministers’ Dialogue is being seen as sign of growing trust between Australia and India.
And Indian delegation led by Amitabh Prasad and Australian delegation headed by Bernard Philip have shown commitment to enhancing strategic ties and supporting regional stability . Still, with China expanding at sea and both countries moving closer, question is how far this partnership will actually go…
