Nilamani Sen Deka,a senior leader and former minister,is back in Congress fold after nearly four years of being expelled.
APCC has now reversed expulsion of Nilamani Sen Deka . Official order was issued by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah, and it says earlier expulsion order against Deka has been withdrawn effective immediately . This happened after directives from Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi.
And honestly, timing says lot here . Congress in Assam is not exactly in comfortable position rn,especially after recent electoral defeats . When party is down, old leaders suddenly start looking useful again, that is politics only.
Deka was initially expelled in May 2022 for alleged anti-party activities and for purportedly violating party discipline repeatedly . At that time, party leadership had said his actions were harming party integrity and public image.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- APCC has reversed expulsion of Nilamani Sen Deka after nearly four years.
- Order was issued by Ramanna Baruah following directives from Gaurav Gogoi.
- Congress had won only 19 seats, while BJP got 82 seats in recent Assembly elections .
But this return is not without baggage ah . Deka had earlier given written assurances that he would not make harmful statements against party, but according to earlier action,he still continued activities considered damaging . He had also attracted attention earlier for statements that sparked political controversy.
At same time,Deka is not some unknown worker . He has long career in Assam politics and had served as Agriculture Minister under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi . So bringing him back may be attempt to reconnect with old Congress base and familiar faces.
And after Congress falling to historic low with only 19 seats against BJP's 82 seats, party clearly has to reassess many decisions . Maybe leadership feels internal fights cannot continue when outside challenge is already so big.
Still, question remains uncomfortable . Is this real reconciliation inside Assam Congress,or just election-loss pressure forcing party to bring back people it once called harmful for its own image…
