Something really special is happening with Warwickshire Bears in Vitality Blast 2026 and honestly, their latest performance against Sussex Sharks at Edgbaston on July 1 was just clinical from start to finish . 76-run victory is not small thing at all.
Bears posted 198 for 3 which on any day is daunting total . And what made it more impressive was that it was not one person carrying the innings . Three batters crossed fifty-run mark and Sussex never really stood a chance.
Rob Yates came out swinging hard — 54 off just 27 balls . That kind of start puts opposing team under pressure immediately . Then Beau Webster steadied things with well-made 60 while Sam Hain played anchor role to absolute perfection, remaining unbeaten on 68 to push total to that commanding score .
Honestly,199 is a chase that needs something very special from opposition . Sussex could not find it.
Richard Gleeson then just dismantled Sussex batting in reply . His figures of 4 for 19 were genuinely remarkable and Sussex were bundled out for only 122 . That is 76-run loss and it was not even close in the end.
Three things that stood out from July 1 action:
- Bears top order fired together with Yates,Webster, and Hain all crossing 50-run mark to power total of 198 for 3.
- Gleeson's figures of 4 for 19 were decisive as Sussex collapsed to 122 in chase.
- Lancashire's Jimmy Anderson bowled penultimate over costing only three runs, finishing with 2 for 19 to seal four-run win over Derbyshire .
And over in North Group,Lancashire Lightning were involved in completely different kind of game . High-scoring and right down to wire.
Lancashire reached 205 on back of Ben McDermott's 68 and Shadab Khan reaching his fifty in just 19 balls . That is genuinely explosive batting and it set up what became real thriller.
Derbyshire Falcons had Aneurin Donald playing one of more spectacular innings you will see — 88 off 37 deliveries . That kind of knock kept Falcons very much in game and crowd must have been on edge for long time.
But then Jimmy Anderson showed why experience in death overs matters so much . He bowled that crucial penultimate over conceding only three runs when pressure was at its highest . Akif Javed did take 4 for 36 in final over but it was not quite enough . Derbyshire finished on 201 and Lancashire held on to win by four runs.
Two very different matches but same result — favorites finding ways to win when it mattered . Warwickshire Bears look like team in form and Lancashire showed real character under pressure.
But question that stays in mind is whether Sussex and Derbyshire both find answers before competition goes further . Derbyshire especially, losing by four runs with Donald playing innings of that quality… that kind of defeat can stay with a team for long time
