In a deeply distressing incident that has shaken the community, Chetram Paswan, a 51-year-old retired army personnel and Kargil war veteran, allegedly took the lives of his wife, Sunita Verma (40), and their 16-year-old son, Deep, before ending his own life on February 16. The shocking event unfolded in their residence located in Sen Pashchim Para, Kanpur, when police responded to reports of a body found on the nearby railway track.
The police identified Paswan's body, which was discovered on the railway track near the Kathogar-Imlipur underpass, through an Aadhaar card found in his pocket. The initial assessment indicated that he had been run over by a goods train, leading investigators to suspect suicide. Upon visiting his home to notify family members, police discovered the bodies of his wife and son, both of whom had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
- Domestic dispute suspected — Initial investigations suggest a heated argument may have preceded the killings.
- Financial troubles reported — Paswan had recently taken a loan of approximately ₹12 lakh, raising concerns over family stress.
- Forensic investigation underway — Teams are collecting evidence, including blood samples and CCTV footage, to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.
According to police reports, Sunita was found with a gunshot wound to her head, while Deep was discovered near the bedroom entrance with a bullet injury to his chest. Bloodstains traced from the kitchen to the bedroom suggest a violent confrontation. The police have recovered a licensed double-barrel gun from the scene.
Paswan, originally from Serua Bakhariya village, had retired from the Indian Army and was working as a security guard at a bank, receiving a pension as well. His family had moved into their newly constructed house only three months prior. Neighbors reported hearing arguments between the couple late on the night before the incident, but the exact motive remains unclear. Meanwhile, Paswan's brother has voiced suspicions about the circumstances, insisting that a veteran like Paswan would not commit such an act. The police have stated that further actions will depend on the forensic findings and post-mortem results.
