Journalist Shekhar Gupta has written something quite interesting about Indian politics right now,and honestly it is the kind of analysis that makes you stop and think for moment .
In his National Interest column,Gupta basically argues that BJP has pulled off something like a political miracle . Not because they hold outright majority in Lok Sabha,but because they have managed to dominate entire political space in a way that feels almost complete.
And the interesting part is how this dominance was built. According to Gupta,it happened largely at expense of regional parties . Slowly and steadily,BJP pushed smaller regional players to the margins and converted what was once a messy multi-party competition into something closer to two-party contest . And in that two-party contest,Congress is only significant opposition left standing.
Gupta raises three questions that honestly cut right to center of current political situation:
- Why does BJP actually find Congress to be a convenient rival rather than a threatening one?
- What essential qualities does Congress lack that stop it from challenging BJP effectively?
- How can Congress revitalize itself and become a credible contender again?
These are not small questions . Each one of them points toward something uncomfortable about where Congress stands right now.
On BJP side,Gupta identifies four key pillars holding up their political strength . Hard Hindutva,strong nationalism,efficient and equitable welfare programs,and massive investment in visible physical infrastructure . These are not random elements — they work together and they clearly resonate with large sections of electorate.
And that is where Congress really struggles. Because against that kind of clear identity and strategy,Congress has not been able to articulate any compelling alternative vision . Voters looking for direction are not finding answers from other side.
What Gupta is really saying about Congress is quite direct — without serious introspection,without redefining both leadership approach and policy direction,Congress will keep playing role of convenient opponent . Not a real challenger,just a presence that BJP can point toward and use when needed.
That framing is actually quite harsh when you sit with it for moment . Being called a "convenient rival" by your main opponent is not exactly a sign of political strength.
And this whole analysis raises one question that Gupta does not fully resolve — can Congress actually do what is needed,or is the gap between where they are and where they need to be simply too wide at this point…
