One very shocking situation has played out in Mumbai on July 7,2026 where monsoon rains essentially paralyzed entire train network and honestly,the scale of what happened is difficult to even process properly .
Central Railway reported that Karjat-Lonavala Ghat section received 600 mm of rain within a single day . That is not small number at all . To put that in some context,Mumbai city itself crossed 200 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours,with some locations pushing close to 300 mm . And all of this came down within one day only.
Naturally,landslides started happening across multiple areas . Thakurwadi,Khandala… several spots were affected,and all three rail lines in Bhor Ghat section got disrupted at same time . Central Railway officials confirmed extensive track damage but said restoration work began immediately despite weather still being terrible outside .
And this is where things get uncomfortable because restoration teams were essentially working in same conditions that caused damage in first place.
Three things standing out clearly from this situation:
- Multiple landslides near Thakurwadi and Khandala disrupted all three rail lines in Bhor Ghat section simultaneously .
- Track damage was extensive but Central Railway immediately started restoration efforts despite ongoing adverse weather.
- Watchmen were stationed at vulnerable points to alert incoming trains about landslide locations,preventing passenger injuries.
That last point honestly deserves more attention . In middle of chaos,someone made a sensible call to station watchmen at danger points . That decision likely prevented something much worse from happening.
India Meteorological Department issued alerts extending well beyond Maharashtra . Odisha and Kerala were also flagged,which means this was not just local rainfall event but part of larger monsoon system moving across country right now.
IMD also issued red alert specifically for Vasai-Virar region,urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel . Waterlogging,reduced visibility,disrupted trains… situation in Mumbai was genuinely overwhelming for people trying to manage daily life.
But trains were not the only problem .
Pune-Mumbai Expressway was halted for nearly 19 hours because of a separate landslide . Authorities eventually managed to restore two lanes of Missing Link section which connects both cities . Some relief came from that,but with rain continuing,smooth traffic flow remained difficult even after lanes reopened.
And this whole episode again forces a hard question about infrastructure in areas that receive extreme rainfall every single monsoon season . 600 mm in one day is extreme,yes,but ghat sections facing landslides during heavy rain is not exactly a new story for this region…
How many more monsoons before long-term solutions actually arrive,that is something nobody seems to have a clear answer to right now .
