Something R Madhavan said recently has been circulating again online and honestly,it is hitting different because he is not wrong about any of it .
The veteran actor basically opened up about one very real problem inside Bollywood — that Indian actors do not get residual payments for their past work . While Hollywood performers keep earning from old films through royalties,Indian actors get paid once and that's it . No long-term income,no safety net,nothing.
During his interaction with India TV Showbiz,Madhavan reflected on how three of his biggest hits — 3 Idiots,Rang De Basanti and Tanu Weds Manu — could have functioned as lifelong financial security for his family . But because of how Indian film industry works,none of that happened.
And his exact words are worth reading properly. He said,"If I was a Hollywood actor,two or three films would be enough to feed the rest of my generations if they live sensibly." That one line says everything honestly.
He also brought up one very interesting example — Amrish Puri . The late actor reportedly still receives royalties for his role in Steven Spielberg production even now . That is the kind of system Madhavan is talking about . Not just big paychecks upfront,but actual long-term financial recognition for good work.
Few things Madhavan pointed out that really stand out:
- Financial risk-taking suffers because absence of residuals forces actors to chase high salaries instead of choosing experimental or risky projects .
- Amrish Puri's family reportedly still receives royalties from his Steven Spielberg production work even after his passing.
- Contractual challenges remain serious and Madhavan specifically called for judiciary to better support and enforce film industry contracts.
He also talked about gap between industry's "upper echelon" and everyone else . Stars commanding double-digit salaries can manage their lifestyle without constant pressure . But many other actors get used to certain way of living and then have no recurring income to sustain it without working nonstop . That cycle becomes exhausting very fast.
And the legal side of this is equally frustrating . Madhavan pointed out that faulty payment systems have become industry norm because most people simply do not have resources to fight these disputes in court . So broken system just keeps running because challenging it is too expensive for most .
Conversations around residuals — basically royalties paid whenever film earns through OTT platforms or television — have been picking up momentum recently . Madhavan's view is that fixing this one thing could completely transform Indian cinema .
He said,"The moment residuals are possible,I'm sure everybody would like to jump in because then you can do the kind of work that you want." And that makes complete sense . Right now financial pressure is the reason so many talented people are playing it safe with their project choices.
What makes this whole conversation uncomfortable is that Bollywood has been functioning this way for decades . Nobody at top of system really has strong incentive to change it . And actors who could push for change are often the same ones who finally reached financial comfort and may not want to rock boat…
