On May 30, 2026 ,North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said both countries share unified stance on all strategic issues .
Her remarks came during ceremony at Russian Embassy in Pyongyang, where memorial plaque was unveiled for late Ambassador Alexander Matsegora . He had served as Russia's envoy to North Korea for over a decade before his sudden death at age of 70.
And this was not some small diplomatic event also . Several prominent officials attended, including Jo Yong-won,Chairman of Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly . That kind of presence itself shows how much importance was being given to Russia ties.
Choe Son-hui spoke about relationship like something much deeper than normal politics . She said cooperation between North Korea and Russia is based on “comradeship and trust forged in blood,” which is very heavy wording ah.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Choe emphasized both nations are aligned in defending their core interests .
- Relationship has grown through shared challenges and cooperation since Cold War.
- North Korea wants deeper collaboration with Russia based on earlier agreements .
And tbh,the message is quite direct . North Korea is saying it sees Russia not just as partner, but as country standing on same side in bigger global fight .
This also comes at time when both nations are dealing with heavy pressure from Western powers . So when Choe says both countries are achieving success in expanding bilateral relations,it sounds like reassurance to Moscow as much as message to outside world.
But at same time, this kind of closeness will definitely make other countries watch more carefully . Security, economic cooperation, regional balance… all these things start looking different when Pyongyang and Moscow keep moving closer.
And now question is not whether North Korea and Russia are friendly . That part is already clear only . Real question is how far this partnership will go,and who will feel impact first…
