On February 3, NCP legislator Amol Mitkari made a heartfelt appeal for the Maharashtra government to rename its flagship Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana in memory of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Mitkari emphasized that Pawar, affectionately known as Ajitdada, was a beloved figure among women across the state, often seen surrounded by rakhis during his travels.
Mitkari stated, "His wrist would be full of rakhis when he travelled across the state during his yatras," highlighting Pawar's connection with the female populace. He argued that renaming the scheme to Ajitdadanchi Ladki Bahin scheme would be a fitting tribute and recognition of Pawar's contributions to the state's welfare.
- Scheme assists women financially — provides ₹1,500 monthly to eligible women aged 21 to 65
- Electoral significance — played a crucial role in BJP's 2024 assembly elections victory
- Government's commitment — Deputy CM Eknath Shinde assures continuation and potential increase in assistance
The Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana, which was launched in July 2024 when Ajit Pawar was the finance minister, has been instrumental in empowering women by providing direct financial assistance. Mitkari’s proposal to rename the scheme comes in the wake of Pawar's tragic death in a plane crash in Baramati, Pune district, on January 28.
In response to Mitkari's request, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that the government would not only continue the monthly assistance but is also considering an increase from ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 at an appropriate time. This commitment highlights the government’s recognition of the scheme's importance in supporting women across the state.
