In a proactive measure to ensure public safety during the upcoming Diwali festival, the Mumbai Police have announced a ban on the use, sale, and storage of flying lanterns, also known as sky lanterns. This prohibition will be in effect from October 31 to November 29, 2026. The decision was made in light of safety concerns associated with these lanterns, which can lead to fire hazards and endanger lives and property.
The order was issued by Akbar Pathan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The police emphasized that compliance with this ban is crucial for the safety of all residents during the festive period, which is often marked by extensive fireworks and celebrations.
- Fire hazard concerns — Flying lanterns can ignite nearby structures and cause widespread damage.
- Public safety priority — The ban aims to protect citizens from potential injuries or fatalities.
- Community compliance — Authorities are urging the public to adhere to the prohibitory order for a safe Diwali.
The Mumbai Police have reiterated that the risks associated with flying lanterns are too great to overlook. Past incidents have demonstrated how these lanterns can escape control, leading to fires that endanger not just the individuals using them, but also entire neighborhoods. As the festival approaches, the police are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's residents.
