So Mumbai's lake levels have now crossed nearly 50% mark and honestly, this is actually good news worth paying attention to . As of morning of July 11,2026,city's reservoirs are sitting at 49.83% of their total live storage capacity according to Hydraulic Engineer's Department,Master Control Centre at Bhandup Complex .
Total water stock right now stands at 721,278 million litres . And when you compare that to same date last year when levels were at 73.88% with 1,069,357 ML available… yes, current numbers are still lower but direction is clearly improving .
Because here is what makes this more interesting. Back in 2024 on this same date, reservoirs had only 322,143 ML recorded which was just 22.26% capacity . So compared to that year, current situation is looking significantly better.
And then there is that specific moment which really stands out in all this data.
Both Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake began overflowing on July 7 . Vihar Lake started spilling at 9 PM that night and Tulsi Lake followed at 11:43 PM same night . Overflow from these lakes is generally seen as one strong positive signal for season ahead.
Few key things worth noting from this update:
- Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake both overflowed on July 7,indicating monsoon is actively replenishing city's water sources.
- Current storage of 721,278 ML at 49.83% is major improvement over 2024's 322,143 ML at 22.26% capacity .
- BMC is actively monitoring reservoir levels and weather patterns through its dedicated Mumbai Monsoon News hub for real-time updates.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is keeping close watch on weather patterns and lake levels to manage city's water needs through coming months . Residents have been encouraged to follow latest civic advisories and weather forecasts as monsoon continues to progress .
Honestly, the numbers from 2024 were genuinely worrying for lot of people in city . Seeing levels recover this way within one year does bring some relief, especially for those anxious about water cuts later in year.
At same time, monsoon is unpredictable and one good week does not mean full season is secure . City still needs consistent and well-distributed rainfall across catchment areas to ensure reservoirs stay healthy through dry months.
So question really is whether this momentum holds or whether things plateau somewhere around 60-70% and rain becomes inconsistent again… because that is exactly what has happened in some previous years and water supply stress returns faster than anyone expects
