The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has finalized a robust strategy to confront the BJP government during the state assembly's budget session in Bhopal. During a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held on Monday evening, opposition leaders identified the Indore water tragedy and farmer distress as primary points of contention. The budget session, which began with protests, is expected to remain heated until its conclusion on March 6.
Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar stated that the party would not allow the session to become a mere "game of numbers." He highlighted the tragic death of over 30 individuals in Indore's Bhagirathpura area due to contaminated water consumption. The Congress has moved an adjournment motion regarding this administrative negligence, demanding immediate accountability and a thorough investigation into the incident.
- Indore water tragedy — Congress demands answers for 30 deaths due to contamination
- Farmer procurement issues — Opposition criticizes the Bhavantar model for soybean crops
- State debt white paper — Demand for transparency on the state's economic condition
The opposition also plans to target the government on the Bhavantar model, alleging that it deprives farmers of the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Umang Singhar expressed concerns that the US-India interim trade agreement might further harm local agricultural interests. Furthermore, the Congress is demanding the resignation of ministers Kailash Vijayvargiya, Rajendra Shukla, and Vijay Shah over alleged administrative failures.
The state budget for 2026-27 is scheduled to be presented on February 18. Singhar claimed that the state's debt burden has now exceeded the total budget size, prompting a call for a white paper on Madhya Pradesh's economy. As the session progresses, the Congress intends to forcefully raise the rights of tribal, Dalit, and OBC communities, alongside issues of rising crime against women.
