Something pretty unexpected came out of Hyderabad recently, and it's getting a lot of attention. Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, publicly spoke about the LGBTQ community in a way that many people simply did not see coming from that platform.
Bhagwat apparently addressed how certain people look at LGBTQ individuals with contempt, treating them as if they exist outside of society. And he pushed back on that directly. His position, stated clearly, was that members of the LGBTQ community are part of society and deserve dignity and equality.
He actually went further than just a general statement, noting that some individuals are born that way and that no one can change that fact. It is crucial to recognize their humanity and right to live with respect.
That kind of language, coming from the head of the RSS, is genuinely surprising to a lot of people who follow Indian politics and social discourse.
Bhagwat also made the point that LGBTQ existence in India is not some new western import, which is a common criticism thrown around in public debates. He argued this has always been part of Indian society, and traditional values have historically acknowledged it.
A few things from his address stand out:
- Bhagwat noted that India has always had LGBTQ members and that traditional values have recognized their existence.
- He pointed out that LGBTQ individuals have their own deities and places of worship, and even participate in events like Kumbh Mela.
- He urged parents specifically to model empathy and understanding at home rather than responding to their children with fear or reprimand.
The parenting angle is interesting, honestly. He wasn't just speaking to society at large. He was directing a specific message toward families, saying the change has to start at home, through love and understanding rather than shame.
And that shift in framing matters. Because a lot of the stigma LGBTQ individuals face in India doesn't come from strangers alone. It comes from within families, behind closed doors, long before any public conversation even begins.
Bhagwat's comments don't automatically translate into policy change or shift the RSS's institutional stance overnight. And there will be plenty of people on different sides analyzing exactly what these words do or do not commit to.
But the fact that this conversation is happening publicly, at that level, in that setting, is something people are clearly not ignoring. Whether it signals a genuine turning point or remains an isolated moment… that's the part nobody seems to have an answer to just yet.
