Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has issued a stern challenge to the opposition, vowing to resign if any evidence of his involvement in the Lengpui land deal scam is found. Speaking on February 16, the Chief Minister dismissed allegations of receiving ₹10 crore in kickbacks, calling the claims an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM).
The controversy centers on the acquisition of land near the Lengpui airport, located 32 km from Aizawl, for an Indian Air Force (IAF) base. Congress leader John Rotluangliana had earlier alleged that the Chief Minister requested payments in gold as part of a ₹187.90 crore financial irregularity. Lalduhoma clarified that his government is merely facilitating the lease between landowners and the IAF.
- CBI Probe Initiated — The Central Bureau of Investigation has been tasked with investigating the land acquisition process
- Resignation Pledge — CM Lalduhoma vowed to quit if any evidence of corruption is verified
- Lease Protocol — The state government maintains the land is being leased, not sold permanently
The Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress have both filed complaints seeking a thorough investigation. They allege that ₹187.90 crore was mishandled and that two individuals who were not the original landowners received the majority of the compensation. The CBI branch in Imphal is now handling the case to determine if standard legal procedures were bypassed.
Lalduhoma countered the attacks by alleging that the previous MNF administration under Zoramthanga had tried to sell the land illegally. He emphasized that his administration is following standard protocols and that the "truth will emerge" once the CBI completes its inquiry. The IAF base is intended to house fighter aircraft and refueling facilities to strengthen regional security.
