One very unusual story has come out of Mumbai that honestly made me stop and read twice . Because this is not your typical rags-to-riches story . This is something else entirely.
Bharat Jain,a beggar who works the streets near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Azaad Maidan area,has reportedly accumulated a fortune of ₹7.5 crore through begging over past 40 years . Yes,you read that correctly . Forty years of begging,and man is sitting on crores .
What makes this even more surprising is daily routine involved . Jain spends around 10 to 12 hours daily on streets and reportedly earns ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 each day . That adds up to roughly ₹75,000 per month . Which is honestly more than what many salaried professionals take home in Mumbai right now.
And when you look at what he has built with that money,it gets even more difficult to process.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Jain has invested in two flats in Mumbai worth ₹1.4 crore through earnings from begging.
- He owns two shops in Thane generating monthly rental income of ₹30,000.
- Despite family repeatedly urging him to quit,Jain continues begging and shows no intention of stopping.
His own words on the matter are quite something . He has publicly stated,"I enjoy begging and will not stop. I am not greedy; I am generous. I donate to temples and charitable organizations." And honestly,that statement alone has sent people into long debates online about what poverty even means in today's world .
Because here is where things get genuinely uncomfortable for lot of people . This man has more assets than majority of working middle-class families in same city . Yet he still sits on street and asks for money . That contradiction is messing with people's heads,and understandably so.
Story has gone completely viral on social media and reactions are very mixed . Some people find it fascinating,some find it disturbing,some are questioning whether public sympathy toward beggars needs to be completely rethought . Others are pointing out that this one case cannot represent whole community living in genuine hardship on streets.
And that part is important to keep in mind . Bharat Jain's story is clearly one extraordinary exception . Most people begging on streets of Mumbai are not sitting on crore-worth property portfolios . Real poverty is very real and very widespread.
But at same time,his story does raise questions that don't have easy answers . About how street economy works in large Indian cities . About where donations actually go . About why someone with this level of wealth would choose to continue same lifestyle for decades without change.
His family has apparently tried to pull him away from this life . But Jain seems completely settled in his identity and routine after 40 years . Maybe at some point the begging stopped being about money for him and became something else entirely…
