Nitesh Rane, Maharashtra's Minister, ignited controversy by declaring that he would withhold development funds if candidates from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) won in the upcoming Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections. Rane's comments came during an election rally in the Fonda constituency of Kankavli in Sindhudurg district, where he claimed that funding decisions would be based on party symbols. "I release funds after looking at the poll symbol. If I see the lotus or the bow and arrow (BJP and Shiv Sena symbols), funds are granted immediately. But if the flaming torch symbol (Sena UBT) appears, I will even cut funds already sanctioned," he stated.
Rane's remarks were met with swift backlash from the opposition. Akhil Chitre, a leader from the Shiv Sena (UBT), criticized Rane, asserting that the government treasury is public money, not a personal asset. Chitre described Rane's comments as a blatant admission of power misuse, questioning whether Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would take action against him. Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal condemned the situation, claiming that Maharashtra is transitioning from democracy to an authoritarian regime under Fadnavis.
- Upcoming elections on February 7 — The Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections are crucial for local governance.
- Controversial remarks — Rane's statements have sparked debates about democratic integrity in Maharashtra.
- Opposition's strong response — Leaders from various parties have condemned Rane's threats, calling for accountability.
Rane further expressed confidence that the local elections were favoring the BJP, claiming that Uddhav Thackeray's candidates were barely visible during campaigning and suggesting they would have to approach the BJP for funds post-elections. This assertion reflects a broader strategy by the ruling party to consolidate power at the local level.
The political climate in Maharashtra is charged as the elections draw near, with Rane's history of controversial statements and actions raising eyebrows. He previously faced backlash for inflammatory remarks targeting specific communities, illustrating a pattern of divisive rhetoric. As the elections approach, the implications of Rane's statements on the electoral process and governance in Maharashtra remain to be seen, posing questions about the future of democratic practices in the state.
