Maharashtra is going through something really serious right now and honestly,the scale of disruption hitting state from all sides is difficult to even process fully.
High alert has been issued across Maharashtra until July 8 as extreme rainfall continues to batter multiple regions. Flooding,landslides,road collapses,power outages… situation is showing no signs of slowing down at all.
Sahyadri mountain range has taken particularly brutal hit . Lonavla recorded 620 mm of rain in just 24-hour period which is absolutely staggering number . And Mahabaleshwar registered 403 mm in single day plus 916 mm over last two days combined. These are not small figures.
And then there is death toll which has now reached 15 people. One life was lost in Satara due to landslide. Another person died because of lightning strike in Nandurbar. Every time rains like this hit,numbers like these follow and it never becomes easier to read .
Few things standing out clearly from what is happening right now:
- Rail services between Mumbai and Pune have been severely affected for second consecutive day due to landslides damaging tracks on Karjat-Lonavla section .
- Mumbai's seven lakes supplying drinking water have seen levels rise to 28.9%,which is one positive outcome coming out of otherwise chaotic situation.
- Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has announced suspension of water supply for nearly 48 hours after rising river levels damaged main pipeline.
Transportation across state is in bad shape. Mumbai-Nashik section of Agra highway faced disruptions due to falling rocks and mudslides in Kasara Ghat area. Mumbai-Pune Expressway is experiencing traffic delays from fresh mudslides. Suburban train services between Vasai Road and Virar have also been interrupted. Lonavla-Khandala stretch has multiple road cave-ins with people being trapped.
Rescue operations are actively running in Pune where residents got stranded in homes and vehicles. Schools and colleges in Palghar district have been ordered shut as relief work continues across region .
And then there is one genuinely unexpected development — six-foot crocodile was rescued near Powai after it was spotted sheltering under parked cars. Flooding is clearly pushing wildlife into unusual places and honestly,that detail says a lot about how severe ground-level situation really is .
Bombay High Court also stepped in with sharp observation,stating that chronic waterlogging problem in Mumbai is made worse by encroachments and clogged drains . Court essentially said city has created this situation itself . And that statement is uncomfortable but hard to argue against.
Because every single monsoon season same scenes repeat in Maharashtra… flooded roads,stranded commuters,disrupted rail lines,collapsed walls. Infrastructure is clearly struggling to keep up with rainfall intensity. And with alert extended until July 8,more difficult days seem to be ahead for residents across state.
Question that keeps coming back is — how many more monsoons will pass before real long-term solutions actually get implemented,or will things just reset back to normal until next year's floods arrive again…
