The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is partially blocked due to landslide,around 100 tonnes of debris came down and that is not small thing at all .
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given update saying roughly 70% of that debris has been cleared so far . Work is still ongoing but he has clearly advised people to avoid using expressway unless absolutely necessary . And given the weather conditions continuing,that sounds like genuinely sensible advice to follow right now.
But expressway situation is honestly just one part of bigger picture here.
Mumbai itself has been hit badly . BMC reported 523 tree fall incidents in just last 24 hours . That number alone tells you how serious the situation on ground really is.
And tragically,one of those incidents turned fatal . 63-year-old Yunus Kundawala lost his life due to tree fall,and ten other people sustained injuries . These are real people getting hurt,not just statistics being reported.
Three things standing out from this whole situation:
- India Meteorological Department has issued red alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport saw four flight cancellations and over 330 delays due to severe weather .
- Winds expected to reach speeds of 70-80 kmph,making travel and safety conditions even more dangerous .
Regions like Thane,Palghar,Raigad and Ratnagiri are all under red alert right now . Sindhudurg has been placed under orange alert . Authorities are monitoring situation closely and asking citizens to stay indoors as much as possible .
And for city like Mumbai,which is already one of most densely populated places in country,this combination of tree falls,flight disruptions and blocked roads creates enormous pressure on emergency services . BMC teams are working continuously but scale of incidents is clearly very high .
What makes whole thing more uncomfortable is that monsoon is far from over . Heavy rains are expected to continue and government is coordinating with various agencies to manage impact and keep public safe.
523 tree falls in 24 hours… one life already lost… hundreds of flights disrupted… and weather showing no signs of calming down soon . Honestly,one just hopes emergency teams can keep up with whatever comes next because situation is still very much unfolding…
