The Ophthalmological Society recently celebrated the historic achievement of Dr Bibhuti Kashyap, a young retina surgeon from Jharkhand. During the annual convention on February 15, it was revealed that Dr Kashyap has become the only surgeon globally to secure two Rhett Buckler Trophies in a single year. These awards are widely regarded as the 'Oscars' of the surgical retina world.
The prestigious trophy is an eight-pound, 24-carat gold-plated statuette manufactured by RS Owens, the same firm responsible for the iconic Academy Awards trophies. Dr Partha Biswas, the president of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), lauded the surgeon's feat at the Jharkhand Ophthalmological Society (JOS) meeting, calling it a moment of immense pride for the nation.
- Global benchmark — Dr Kashyap won two trophies at the ASRS 2025 annual meeting in California
- Surgical excellence — The awards recognize the best surgical retina videos submitted from across the world
- Historic debut — The surgeon achieved this feat immediately after joining the ASRS in early 2025
Beyond his trophy wins, Dr Kashyap was a featured speaker at the 6th World ROP Congress 2025. He presented a talk titled AIM-ROP, which utilized Fluorescein Angiography data from 200 eyes of premature infants. This was the first-ever advanced management presentation on Retinopathy of Prematurity from the Jharkhand and Bihar region at such a high-level international forum.
Dr Mohan Rajan, vice president of AIOS, described the young surgeon as a "shining star" of Indian ophthalmology. The recognition highlights the advanced capabilities of the Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital and places India at the forefront of innovative vitreoretinal surgery and pediatric eye care on the global stage.
