The maritime landscape of India witnessed a significant upgrade as the government officially launched the ORV Sagar Manthan. This state-of-the-art ocean research vessel was unveiled at the Rishi Bankim Shipyard in Kolkata, marking a major step toward achieving self-reliance in oceanographic science. The project represents a massive investment in India's scientific infrastructure.
Constructed by the defense public sector undertaking Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), the vessel was built at an estimated cost of ₹840 crore. It serves as a cornerstone of the government's Deep Ocean Mission, specifically under the Vertical-4 category which focuses on deep-ocean survey and exploration. This new ship is an all-weather, multidisciplinary platform capable of traversing the harshest marine environments.

During the virtual launch ceremony, Union Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition. He noted that while the global community still has much to learn about the depths of the sea, vessels like the ORV Sagar Manthan provide the necessary tools to gather data on melting glaciers and climate shifts. Jitendra Singh stated, "Solid data collected by vessels like ORV Sagar Manthan will allow India to lead the global path in disaster prevention, take corrective environmental measures, and play a pivotal role in global ocean geopolitics."
The vessel is designed to explore the Indian Ocean mid-oceanic ridges, searching for multi-metal hydrothermal sulphide mineralisation. Beyond mining, the ship will establish environmental baselines and collect upper-air data to improve weather forecasting models. Its integration of dynamic positioning ensures it can remain stationary even in rough seas for precise sampling.
Technologically, the ORV Sagar Manthan is a marvel of modern engineering. It features sub-bottom profiling, weather radar, and drop keels that allow for the deployment of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). These tools enable scientists to study the ocean floor at depths previously inaccessible to Indian researchers, opening new avenues for biological and geological discoveries.
The transition from the ORV Sagar Kanya to this new platform signifies a shift from imported technology to indigenous manufacturing. The ORV Sagar Kanya served India faithfully for over four decades since its procurement in 1983, but the demands of modern science required a more sophisticated successor.
As the ORV Sagar Manthan begins its sea trials, it carries the weight of India's geopolitical aspirations in the maritime domain. By providing high-quality data, the vessel will help the nation play a central role in global ocean politics and environmental protection.
Looking ahead, the Deep Ocean Mission plans to utilize this vessel for several high-priority projects.
