At 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong on May 30,2026,Indian athletes picked up three additional gold medals and took total to seven . Not small thing ah,especially at U20 level where future stars start showing themselves.
And what makes it better is that medals came from different events, not just one strong area . Long jump, steeplechase, high jump… that spread itself says young Indian athletes are not depending on one or two names only.
Shahnavaz Khan was one of big performers of day . He dominated men’s long jump with winning jump of 7.84m,and that was also personal best . For young athlete to hit personal best while winning gold at Asian level, that confidence boost must be huge .
Then came Nikhil Chandrashekar in men’s 3000m steeplechase . He claimed gold with time of 9:25.44 seconds, and his achievement was also listed as personal best . Endurance events are never easy, because it is not just speed,it is lungs, legs, patience and pain tolerance together .
Basant also added another gold in men’s high jump by clearing 2.20m . And honestly, when India is getting golds in both long jump and high jump at same meet,it feels like field events are quietly becoming stronger than many people realise.
Few things standing out from this day:
- Shahnavaz Khan won men’s long jump with 7.84m.
- Nikhil Chandrashekar won men’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:25.44 seconds.
- Basant cleared 2.20m to win gold in men’s high jump .
India’s overall tally reached seven golds and team was second in medal tally . That line may look simple, but for junior athletics,it matters because this is where depth starts showing . One medal can be surprise, but seven golds means system is producing more than one standout.
Earlier in event,Pooja had already made headlines by breaking national record in high jump . Her jump of 1.93m won gold and also went past previous national record set in 2012 . That one result alone was big,but now with these three more golds, suddenly whole campaign looks much stronger .
There is also bigger point here . Years of preparation, better sports infrastructure and support from Athletics Federation of India are slowly showing in results . Of course, junior success does not automatically become senior medal success, but it does give hope.
And tbh, this batch now becomes very interesting to follow . If Shahnavaz Khan,Nikhil Chandrashekar,Basant,Pooja and others keep improving,India may have something serious building in athletics… but whether this momentum stays or fades, that question is still hanging there…
