One thing becoming very clear right now is that India are not here to just play cricket on this England tour — they are here to win series . And after what happened at Edgbaston on Tuesday, momentum is strongly sitting with Rohit Sharma's side heading into second ODI at Cardiff.
The first match told quite a story honestly. England had this unbeaten 50-over record at Edgbaston going all the way back to 2014 . India just walked in and ended it with convincing six-wicket win . Not small achievement at all .
And biggest reason for that turnaround was one man — Jasprit Bumrah . His return to playing eleven provided exactly that spark India needed . Opening spell was lethal, dismantled England top order, and set the tone for entire match . When Bumrah is operating like that, opposition batting lineups tend to look very ordinary very quickly.
Prasidh Krishna and newcomer Gurnoor Brar also deserve credit for keeping pressure on hosts from their end . It was not just one-man show on bowling front which is actually more encouraging for India going forward.
Few things that stood out clearly from Edgbaston:
- England middle order collapsed badly, losing five wickets for just 19 runs in disastrous 27-ball period.
- Joe Root scored resilient half-century alongside Liam Dawson who registered maiden ODI fifty, but lack of top-order support left hosts defending subpar total.
- England's selection gamble backfired as they misread pitch by omitting fourth seamer, with Brydon Carse now added back to squad for Cardiff .
Shubman Gill's batting during chase was something else . 80 off 75 balls, classy and composed . He retired hurt due to cramps eventually but India never really looked in trouble throughout innings . Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both had quiet outings, yes, but when your number three bats like that, team absorbs pressure well.
On England side, young opener Jacob Bethell is having difficult time at top of order . Managed only 14 runs from 31 deliveries at Edgbaston while struggling against moving ball . Bethell has excelled in other formats clearly, but this seems like tough initiation into ODI cricket at top of order against quality bowling attack.
Cardiff now presents different challenge because of ground's unique dimensions . Conditions there will not be same as Edgbaston so both teams will have to reassess their plans and approach going into Thursday's clash.
India is literally one win away from securing first piece of silverware on this entire UK tour . That is the position they are in right now. England meanwhile need to find something dramatically different — better selection, better top-order batting, better reading of conditions — otherwise this series ends before final match even matters .
And honestly, the question that keeps sitting uncomfortably is whether England's problems go deeper than just one bad selection call . When five wickets fall in 27 balls, that is not just pitch or conditions… that is something more fundamental going wrong inside team's batting structure . Whether Cardiff brings that answer or just adds more confusion, nobody really knows yet…
