The INDIA bloc is gearing up for a robust campaign against the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI), with a series of protests planned from October 2 to 8, 2026. This initiative was announced during a press briefing held in New Delhi, where key leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee underscored the need for a united opposition front. The campaign primarily aims to address pressing concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which many in the opposition believe undermines the democratic process.
During the press conference, Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the coalition's strategy, which includes protests at district headquarters across the country. He stated that on October 6, all opposition Members of Parliament will march to the Election Commission to express their grievances. This action follows reports of dissent within the Election Commission, particularly related to the leadership of Gyanesh Kumar, who has faced accusations of failing to uphold electoral integrity.
- Week-long protests scheduled — The INDIA bloc will hold district-level protests from October 2 to 8.
- March to the Election Commission — On October 6, opposition MPs will march to demand accountability from the ECI.
- Focus on electoral integrity — The campaign addresses concerns over the SIR process and alleged manipulation.
In a show of solidarity, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the leaders of the INDIA bloc are not only political rivals but also collective defenders of the Constitution. He asserted that their commitment transcends individual political ambitions, framing their struggle as a fight for the fundamental principles of democracy. Gandhi pointed out a rising awareness among the public, particularly youth, regarding the alleged erosion of democratic norms under the current government.
Mamata Banerjee also voiced her concerns, demanding the immediate resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. She indicated that the agitation would intensify if their demands are not met, stressing the need for accountability. Recent reports have highlighted internal dissent within the Election Commission, with officials expressing objections to decisions made under Kumar’s leadership regarding the SIR process. This backdrop sets the stage for a significant confrontation as the INDIA bloc mobilizes its grassroots support in the coming weeks.
